Here's Why We Don't Think Megastudy's (KOSDAQ:072870) Statutory Earnings Reflect Its Underlying Earnings Potential
Many investors consider it preferable to invest in profitable companies over unprofitable ones, because profitability suggests a business is sustainable. However, sometimes companies receive a one-off boost (or reduction) to their profit, and it's not always clear whether statutory profits are a good guide, going forward. Today we'll focus on whether this year's statutory profits are a good guide to understanding Megastudy (KOSDAQ:072870).
It's good to see that over the last twelve months Megastudy made a profit of ₩15.1b on revenue of ₩132.0b. Even though revenue is down over the last three years, you can see in the chart below that the company has moved from loss-making to profitable.

Importantly, statutory profits are not always the best tool for understanding a company's true earnings power, so it's well worth examining profits in a little more detail. This article will focus on the impact unusual items have had on Megastudy's statutory earnings. Note: we always recommend investors check balance sheet strength. The Impact Of Unusual Items On Profit
To properly understand Megastudy's profit results, we need to consider the ₩3.1b gain attributed to unusual items. While we like to see profit increases, we tend to be a little more cautious when unusual items have made a big contribution. When we analysed the vast majority of listed companies worldwide, we found that significant unusual items are often not repeated. And that's as you'd expect, given these boosts are described as 'unusual'. Megastudy had a rather significant contribution from unusual items relative to its profit to September 2020. As a result, we can surmise that the unusual items are making its statutory profit significantly stronger than it would otherwise be.
Our Take On Megastudy's Profit Performance
As previously mentioned, Megastudy's large boost from unusual items won't be there indefinitely, so its statutory earnings are probably a poor guide to its underlying profitability. For this reason, we think that Megastudy's statutory profits may be a bad guide to its underlying earnings power, and might give investors an overly positive impression of the company. Sadly, its EPS was down over the last twelve months. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. While earnings are important, another area to consider is the balance sheet. We've done some analysis and you can see our take on Megastudy's balance sheet by clicking here.
