SG Global Co.,Ltd.'s (KRX:001380) 27% Dip Still Leaving Some Shareholders Feeling Restless Over Its P/ERatio
Unfortunately for some shareholders, the SG Global Co.,Ltd. (KRX:001380) share price has dived 27% in the last thirty days, prolonging recent pain. To make matters worse, the recent drop has wiped out a year's worth of gains with the share price now back where it started a year ago.
Even after such a large drop in price, SG GlobalLtd's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 15.2x might still make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 11x and even P/E's below 6x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
For instance, SG GlobalLtd's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think the company will still do enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

Does Growth Match The High P/E?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should outperform the market for P/E ratios like SG GlobalLtd's to be considered reasonable.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 69% decrease to the company's bottom line. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 21% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is weaker based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's alarming that SG GlobalLtd's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Final Word
Despite the recent share price weakness, SG GlobalLtd's P/E remains higher than most other companies. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of SG GlobalLtd revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look worse than current market expectations. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
