Earnings Not Telling The Story For Winix Inc. (KOSDAQ:044340) After Shares Rise 39%
Winix Inc. (KOSDAQ:044340) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 39% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 39% over that time.
Following the firm bounce in price, given close to half the companies in Korea have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 11x, you may consider Winix as a stock to avoid entirely with its 35.8x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
The earnings growth achieved at Winix over the last year would be more than acceptable for most companies. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this respectable earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as steep as Winix's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market decidedly.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 24%. Still, incredibly EPS has fallen 90% in total from three years ago, which is quite disappointing. Accordingly, shareholders would have felt downbeat about the medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 33% shows it's an unpleasant look.
With this information, we find it concerning that Winix is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
What We Can Learn From Winix's P/E?
The strong share price surge has got Winix's P/E rushing to great heights as well. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Winix currently trades on a much higher than expected P/E since its recent earnings have been in decline over the medium-term. When we see earnings heading backwards and underperforming the market forecasts, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the high P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
