Statutory Profit Doesn't Reflect How Good SNT Energy's (KRX:100840) Earnings Are
SNT Energy Co., Ltd.'s (KRX:100840) earnings announcement last week was disappointing for investors, despite the decent profit numbers. We have done some analysis and have found some comforting factors beneath the profit numbers.
A Closer Look At SNT Energy's Earnings
As finance nerds would already know, the accrual ratio from cashflow is a key measure for assessing how well a company's free cash flow (FCF) matches its profit. In plain english, this ratio subtracts FCF from net profit, and divides that number by the company's average operating assets over that period. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
As a result, a negative accrual ratio is a positive for the company, and a positive accrual ratio is a negative. While having an accrual ratio above zero is of little concern, we do think it's worth noting when a company has a relatively high accrual ratio. To quote a 2014 paper by Lewellen and Resutek, "firms with higher accruals tend to be less profitable in the future".
SNT Energy has an accrual ratio of -0.14 for the year to September 2025. Therefore, its statutory earnings were quite a lot less than its free cashflow. To wit, it produced free cash flow of ₩96b during the period, dwarfing its reported profit of ₩64.5b. SNT Energy's free cash flow improved over the last year, which is generally good to see.
That might leave you wondering what analysts are forecasting in terms of future profitability. Luckily, you can click here to see an interactive graph depicting future profitability, based on their estimates.
Our Take On SNT Energy's Profit Performance
SNT Energy's accrual ratio is solid, and indicates strong free cash flow, as we discussed, above. Because of this, we think SNT Energy's earnings potential is at least as good as it seems, and maybe even better! And on top of that, its earnings per share have grown at an extremely impressive rate over the last three years. Of course, we've only just scratched the surface when it comes to analysing its earnings; one could also consider margins, forecast growth, and return on investment, among other factors.
