Improved Earnings Required Before SNT Holdings Co., Ltd. (KRX:036530) Stock's 27% Jump Looks Justified
The SNT Holdings Co., Ltd. (KRX:036530) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 27%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 40%.
Even after such a large jump in price, SNT Holdings' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 3.6x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Korea, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 12x and even P/E's above 24x are quite common. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly reduced P/E.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, SNT Holdings has been doing very well. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is SNT Holdings' Growth Trending?
In order to justify its P/E ratio, SNT Holdings would need to produce anemic growth that's substantially trailing the market.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 79% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow EPS by 51% in total over the last three years. Therefore, it's fair to say the earnings growth recently has been superb for the company.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 33% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we can see why SNT Holdings is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.
The Final Word
Even after such a strong price move, SNT Holdings' P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that SNT Holdings maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
