These 4 Measures Indicate That Mitsubishi Logistics (TSE:9301) Is Using Debt Reasonably Well

It's only natural to consider a company's balance sheet when you examine how risky it is, since debt is often involved when a business collapses. As with many other companies Mitsubishi Logistics Corporation (TSE:9301) makes use of debt. But the real question is whether this debt is making the company risky.

When Is Debt Dangerous?

Debt is a tool to help businesses grow, but if a business is incapable of paying off its lenders, then it exists at their mercy. A Look At Mitsubishi Logistics' Liabilities

According to the last reported balance sheet, Mitsubishi Logistics had liabilities of JP¥88.2b due within 12 months, and liabilities of JP¥166.8b due beyond 12 months. On the other hand, it had cash of JP¥61.4b and JP¥50.2b worth of receivables due within a year. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by JP¥143.5b.

Mitsubishi Logistics has a market capitalization of JP¥390.2b, so it could very likely raise cash to ameliorate its balance sheet, if the need arose. But we definitely want to keep our eyes open to indications that its debt is bringing too much risk.

In order to size up a company's debt relative to its earnings, we calculate its net debt divided by its earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA) and its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) divided by its interest expense (its interest cover). And remarkably, despite having net debt, it actually received more in interest over the last twelve months than it had to pay. So there's no doubt this company can take on debt while staying cool as a cucumber. On the other hand, Mitsubishi Logistics's EBIT dived 15%, over the last year. We think hat kind of performance, if repeated frequently, could well lead to difficulties for the stock. The balance sheet is clearly the area to focus on when you are analysing debt. The good news is that Mitsubishi Logistics's demonstrated ability to cover its interest expense with its EBIT delights us like a fluffy puppy does a toddler. But the stark truth is that we are concerned by its EBIT growth rate. It's also worth noting that Mitsubishi Logistics is in the Infrastructure industry, which is often considered to be quite defensive. All these things considered, it appears that Mitsubishi Logistics can comfortably handle its current debt levels. Of course, while this leverage can enhance returns on equity, it does bring more risk, so it's worth keeping an eye on this one.
