Nagano Keiki Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:7715) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 28%
The Nagano Keiki Co., Ltd. (TSE:7715) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 70%.
Even after such a large jump in price, Nagano Keiki may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.3x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 15x and even P/E's higher than 23x are not unusual. However, the P/E might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Nagano Keiki certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Nagano Keiki would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 58% gain to the company's bottom line. Pleasingly, EPS has also lifted 529% in aggregate from three years ago, thanks to the last 12 months of growth. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the only analyst covering the company suggest earnings growth is heading into negative territory, declining 12% over the next year. With the market predicted to deliver 9.7% growth , that's a disappointing outcome.
In light of this, it's understandable that Nagano Keiki's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
The Final Word
Nagano Keiki's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Using the price-to-earnings ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
As we suspected, our examination of Nagano Keiki's analyst forecasts revealed that its outlook for shrinking earnings is contributing to its low P/E. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
