JEOL (TSE:6951) Is Achieving High Returns On Its Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. In a perfect world, we'd like to see a company investing more capital into its business and ideally the returns earned from that capital are also increasing. Put simply, these types of businesses are compounding machines, meaning they are continually reinvesting their earnings at ever-higher rates of return. So when we looked at the ROCE trend of JEOL (TSE:6951) we really liked what we saw.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on JEOL is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.21 = JP¥31b ÷ (JP¥229b - JP¥86b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2024).
Thus, JEOL has an ROCE of 21%. In absolute terms that's a great return and it's even better than the Electronic industry average of 9.5%.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
The trends we've noticed at JEOL are quite reassuring. The data shows that returns on capital have increased substantially over the last five years to 21%. Basically the business is earning more per dollar of capital invested and in addition to that, 138% more capital is being employed now too. This can indicate that there's plenty of opportunities to invest capital internally and at ever higher rates, a combination that's common among multi-baggers.
In another part of our analysis, we noticed that the company's ratio of current liabilities to total assets decreased to 38%, which broadly means the business is relying less on its suppliers or short-term creditors to fund its operations. Therefore we can rest assured that the growth in ROCE is a result of the business' fundamental improvements, rather than a cooking class featuring this company's books.
Our Take On JEOL's ROCE
All in all, it's terrific to see that JEOL is reaping the rewards from prior investments and is growing its capital base. Since the stock has returned a staggering 125% to shareholders over the last five years, it looks like investors are recognizing these changes. With that being said, we still think the promising fundamentals mean the company deserves some further due diligence.
Like most companies, JEOL does come with some risks, and we've found 1 warning sign that you should be aware of.
