There are a few key trends to look for if we want to identify the next multi-bagger. Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. So, when we ran our eye over NSD's (TSE:9759) trend of ROCE, we really liked what we saw.

What Is Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)?

Just to clarify if you're unsure, ROCE is a metric for evaluating how much pre-tax income (in percentage terms) a company earns on the capital invested in its business. The formula for this calculation on NSD is:

Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) Ă· (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)

0.21 = JP„15b ÷ (JP„86b - JP„15b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to March 2024).

Therefore, NSD has an ROCE of 21%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 16% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What Does the ROCE Trend For NSD Tell Us?

We'd be pretty happy with returns on capital like NSD. The company has consistently earned 21% for the last five years, and the capital employed within the business has risen 49% in that time. Returns like this are the envy of most businesses and given it has repeatedly reinvested at these rates, that's even better. If NSD can keep this up, we'd be very optimistic about its future.

In Conclusion...

NSD has demonstrated its proficiency by generating high returns on increasing amounts of capital employed, which we're thrilled about. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 110% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So even though the stock might be more "expensive" than it was before, we think the strong fundamentals warrant this stock for further research.
