Feedforce Group Inc.'s (TSE:7068) 25% Share Price Plunge Could Signal Some Risk
Feedforce Group Inc. (TSE:7068) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 25% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 40% share price drop.
Even after such a large drop in price, Feedforce Group may still be sending very bearish signals at the moment with a price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 30.1x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios under 13x and even P/E's lower than 9x are not unusual. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the highly elevated P/E.
For instance, Feedforce Group's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to still outplay most other companies over the coming period, which has kept the P/E from collapsing. If not, then existing shareholders may be quite nervous about the viability of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Feedforce Group's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 44%. This means it has also seen a slide in earnings over the longer-term as EPS is down 37% in total over the last three years. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Comparing that to the market, which is predicted to deliver 10% growth in the next 12 months, the company's downward momentum based on recent medium-term earnings results is a sobering picture.
In light of this, it's alarming that Feedforce Group's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. There's a very good chance existing shareholders are setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with the recent negative growth rates.
The Bottom Line On Feedforce Group's P/E
A significant share price dive has done very little to deflate Feedforce Group's very lofty P/E. We'd say the price-to-earnings ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our examination of Feedforce Group revealed its shrinking earnings over the medium-term aren't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given the market is set to grow. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as this earnings performance is highly unlikely to support such positive sentiment for long. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it will place shareholders' investments at significant risk and potential investors in danger of paying an excessive premium.
