AR advanced technology (TSE:5578) Might Be Having Difficulty Using Its Capital Effectively
What are the early trends we should look for to identify a stock that could multiply in value over the long term? Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. Basically this means that a company has profitable initiatives that it can continue to reinvest in, which is a trait of a compounding machine. Having said that, while the ROCE is currently high for AR advanced technology (TSE:5578), we aren't jumping out of our chairs because returns are decreasing.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. Analysts use this formula to calculate it for AR advanced technology:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.27 = JP¥696m ÷ (JP¥6.4b - JP¥3.9b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to May 2025).
Thus, AR advanced technology has an ROCE of 27%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 15% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What The Trend Of ROCE Can Tell Us
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at AR advanced technology doesn't inspire confidence. Historically returns on capital were even higher at 39%, but they have dropped over the last three years. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that AR advanced technology has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 60%, which we'd consider pretty high. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. Ideally we'd like to see this reduce as that would mean fewer obligations bearing risks.
In Conclusion...
While returns have fallen for AR advanced technology in recent times, we're encouraged to see that sales are growing and that the business is reinvesting in its operations. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 163% return over the last year, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So should these growth trends continue, we'd be optimistic on the stock going forward.
