Slammed 27% Speee, Inc. (TSE:4499) Screens Well Here But There Might Be A Catch
Speee, Inc. (TSE:4499) shares have had a horrible month, losing 27% after a relatively good period beforehand. Still, a bad month hasn't completely ruined the past year with the stock gaining 52%, which is great even in a bull market.
Although its price has dipped substantially, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Speee's P/S ratio of 1.4x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the IT industry in Japan is also close to 1.2x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

How Has Speee Performed Recently?
Revenue has risen firmly for Speee recently, which is pleasing to see. Perhaps the market is expecting future revenue performance to only keep up with the broader industry, which has keeping the P/S in line with expectations. Those who are bullish on Speee will be hoping that this isn't the case, so that they can pick up the stock at a lower valuation.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Speee would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company managed to grow revenues by a handy 10% last year. This was backed up an excellent period prior to see revenue up by 35% in total over the last three years. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
When compared to the industry's one-year growth forecast of 6.3%, the most recent medium-term revenue trajectory is noticeably more alluring
With this information, we find it interesting that Speee is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance is at its limits and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What Does Speee's P/S Mean For Investors?
Speee's plummeting stock price has brought its P/S back to a similar region as the rest of the industry. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
To our surprise, Speee revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching this positive performance. It appears some are indeed anticipating revenue instability, because the persistence of these recent medium-term conditions would normally provide a boost to the share price.
