Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Tazmo Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:6266) Earnings Despite 26% Price Jump
The Tazmo Co., Ltd. (TSE:6266) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 26%. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 18% in the last twelve months.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Tazmo's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 9.7x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 15x and even P/E's above 23x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Tazmo could be doing better as its earnings have been going backwards lately while most other companies have been seeing positive earnings growth. It seems that many are expecting the dour earnings performance to persist, which has repressed the P/E. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Is There Any Growth For Tazmo?
The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Tazmo's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.
Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 10%. Even so, admirably EPS has lifted 44% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing earnings over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the three analysts covering the company suggest earnings should grow by 8.5% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 9.6% each year, which is not materially different.
In light of this, it's peculiar that Tazmo's P/E sits below the majority of other companies. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can achieve future growth expectations.
The Bottom Line On Tazmo's P/E
Tazmo's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Tazmo's analyst forecasts revealed that its market-matching earnings outlook isn't contributing to its P/E as much as we would have predicted. When we see an average earnings outlook with market-like growth, we assume potential risks are what might be placing pressure on the P/E ratio. It appears some are indeed anticipating earnings instability, because these conditions should normally provide more support to the share price.
