SEKIDO Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:9878) 30% Price Boost Is Out Of Tune With Revenues
The SEKIDO Co., Ltd. (TSE:9878) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 30%. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 20% is also fairly reasonable.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, it's still not a stretch to say that SEKIDO's price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x right now seems quite "middle-of-the-road" compared to the Specialty Retail industry in Japan, where the median P/S ratio is around 0.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does SEKIDO's Recent Performance Look Like?
For instance, SEKIDO's receding revenue in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the company to put the disappointing revenue performance behind them over the coming period, which has kept the P/S from falling. If not, then existing shareholders may be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

SEKIDO's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 2.2% decrease to the company's top line. At least revenue has managed not to go completely backwards from three years ago in aggregate, thanks to the earlier period of growth. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
This is in contrast to the rest of the industry, which is expected to grow by 7.3% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it interesting that SEKIDO is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. Maintaining these prices will be difficult to achieve as a continuation of recent revenue trends is likely to weigh down the shares eventually.
What We Can Learn From SEKIDO's P/S?
Its shares have lifted substantially and now SEKIDO's P/S is back within range of the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that SEKIDO's average P/S is a bit surprising since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider industry forecast. When we see weak revenue with slower than industry growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, bringing the P/S back in line with expectations. If recent medium-term revenue trends continue, the probability of a share price decline will become quite substantial, placing shareholders at risk.
