A Closer Look At Sun Frontier Fudousan's Earnings
In high finance, the key ratio used to measure how well a company converts reported profits into free cash flow (FCF) is the accrual ratio (from cashflow). The accrual ratio subtracts the FCF from the profit for a given period, and divides the result by the average operating assets of the company over that time. The ratio shows us how much a company's profit exceeds its FCF.
That means a negative accrual ratio is a good thing, because it shows that the company is bringing in more free cash flow than its profit would suggest. While it's not a problem to have a positive accrual ratio, indicating a certain level of non-cash profits, a high accrual ratio is arguably a bad thing, because it indicates paper profits are not matched by cash flow. That's because some academic studies have suggested that high accruals ratios tend to lead to lower profit or less profit growth.
Sun Frontier Fudousan has an accrual ratio of 0.23 for the year to March 2024. Unfortunately, that means its free cash flow fell significantly short of its reported profits. Even though it reported a profit of JP¥11.9b, a look at free cash flow indicates it actually burnt through JP¥14b in the last year. We saw that FCF was JP¥8.7b a year ago though, so Sun Frontier Fudousan has at least been able to generate positive FCF in the past.

Our Take On Sun Frontier Fudousan's Profit Performance
Sun Frontier Fudousan didn't convert much of its profit to free cash flow in the last year, which some investors may consider rather suboptimal. Therefore, it seems possible to us that Sun Frontier Fudousan's true underlying earnings power is actually less than its statutory profit. But on the bright side, its earnings per share have grown at an extremely impressive rate over the last three years. At the end of the day, it's essential to consider more than just the factors above, if you want to understand the company properly. With this in mind, we wouldn't consider investing in a stock unless we had a thorough understanding of the risks. For example, we've found that Sun Frontier Fudousan has 2 warning signs (1 doesn't sit too well with us!) that deserve your attention before going any further with your analysis.
