Investors Appear Satisfied With TKP Corporation's (TSE:3479) Prospects As Shares Rocket 27%
TKP Corporation (TSE:3479) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 27% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 35% over that time.
Since its price has surged higher, when almost half of the companies in Japan's Real Estate industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") below 0.9x, you may consider TKP as a stock probably not worth researching with its 2x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does TKP's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
TKP hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. One possibility is that the P/S ratio is high because investors think this poor revenue performance will turn the corner. However, if this isn't the case, investors might get caught out paying too much for the stock.

TKP's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver solid growth, and importantly, perform better than the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 18%. As a result, revenue from three years ago have also fallen 11% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 28% per annum during the coming three years according to the three analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 4.9% each year growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this in mind, it's not hard to understand why TKP's P/S is high relative to its industry peers. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
What Does TKP's P/S Mean For Investors?
TKP shares have taken a big step in a northerly direction, but its P/S is elevated as a result. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Our look into TKP shows that its P/S ratio remains high on the merit of its strong future revenues. At this stage investors feel the potential for a deterioration in revenues is quite remote, justifying the elevated P/S ratio. Unless these conditions change, they will continue to provide strong support to the share price.
