GMO Media Inc.'s (TSE:6180) 33% Share Price Surge Not Quite Adding Up
The GMO Media Inc. (TSE:6180) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 33%. Taking a wider view, although not as strong as the last month, the full year gain of 23% is also fairly reasonable.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, there still wouldn't be many who think GMO Media's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 14.8x is worth a mention when the median P/E in Japan is similar at about 13x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/E without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.
Recent times have been quite advantageous for GMO Media as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to wane, which has kept the P/E from rising. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be feeling optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should be matching the market for P/E ratios like GMO Media's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 64% last year. Still, EPS has barely risen at all from three years ago in total, which is not ideal. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 11% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.
With this information, we find it interesting that GMO Media is trading at a fairly similar P/E to the market. Apparently many investors in the company are less bearish than recent times would indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock right now. They may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/E falls to levels more in line with recent growth rates.
The Final Word
GMO Media appears to be back in favour with a solid price jump getting its P/E back in line with most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
We've established that GMO Media currently trades on a higher than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is lower than the wider market forecast. When we see weak earnings with slower than market growth, we suspect the share price is at risk of declining, sending the moderate P/E lower. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, it's challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
