The board of Beaglee Inc. (TSE:3981) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend by 13% on the 31st of March to ¥17.00, up from last year's comparable payment of ¥15.00. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 1.1%.

Beaglee's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage

Solid dividend yields are great, but they only really help us if the payment is sustainable. However, Beaglee's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

If the trend of the last few years continues, EPS will grow by 7.2% over the next 12 months. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 14% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Beaglee Is Still Building Its Track Record

The dividend has been pretty stable looking back, but the company hasn't been paying one for very long. This makes it tough to judge how it would fare through a full economic cycle. The annual payment during the last 3 years was ¥12.00 in 2021, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥15.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 7.7% per annum over that time. Beaglee has been growing its dividend at a decent rate, and the payments have been stable. However, the payment history is very short, so there is no evidence yet that the dividend can be sustained over a full economic cycle.

We Could See Beaglee's Dividend Growing

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. Beaglee has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 7.2% per annum. A low payout ratio and decent growth suggests that the company is reinvesting well, and it also has plenty of room to increase the dividend over time.

Our Thoughts On Beaglee's Dividend

In summary, it's great to see that the company can raise the dividend and keep it in a sustainable range. The dividend has been at reasonable levels historically, but that hasn't translated into a consistent payment. The dividend looks okay, but there have been some issues in the past, so we would be a little bit cautious.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Taking the debate a bit further, we've identified 1 warning sign for Beaglee that investors need to be conscious of moving forward. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
