Income Investors Should Know That Chubu Steel Plate Co., Ltd. (TSE:5461) Goes Ex-Dividend Soon

Published
TSE:5461

Chubu Steel Plate Co., Ltd. (TSE:5461) stock is about to trade ex-dividend in 3 days. The ex-dividend date occurs one day before the record date which is the day on which shareholders need to be on the company's books in order to receive a dividend. The ex-dividend date is of consequence because whenever a stock is bought or sold, the trade takes at least two business day to settle. Therefore, if you purchase Chubu Steel Plate's shares on or after the 27th of September, you won't be eligible to receive the dividend, when it is paid on the 2nd of December.

The company's next dividend payment will be JP¥50.00 per share, on the back of last year when the company paid a total of JP¥101 to shareholders. Based on the last year's worth of payments, Chubu Steel Plate has a trailing yield of 4.1% on the current stock price of JP¥2475.00. We love seeing companies pay a dividend, but it's also important to be sure that laying the golden eggs isn't going to kill our golden goose! We need to see whether the dividend is covered by earnings and if it's growing.

Dividends are typically paid out of company income, so if a company pays out more than it earned, its dividend is usually at a higher risk of being cut. Chubu Steel Plate paid out a comfortable 37% of its profit last year. A useful secondary check can be to evaluate whether Chubu Steel Plate generated enough free cash flow to afford its dividend. Over the last year, it paid out dividends equivalent to 286% of what it generated in free cash flow, a disturbingly high percentage. Unless there were something in the business we're not grasping, this could signal a risk that the dividend may have to be cut in the future.

Chubu Steel Plate does have a large net cash position on the balance sheet, which could fund large dividends for a time, if the company so chose. Still, smart investors know that it is better to assess dividends relative to the cash and profit generated by the business. Paying dividends out of cash on the balance sheet is not long-term sustainable.

While Chubu Steel Plate's dividends were covered by the company's reported profits, cash is somewhat more important, so it's not great to see that the company didn't generate enough cash to pay its dividend. Cash is king, as they say, and were Chubu Steel Plate to repeatedly pay dividends that aren't well covered by cashflow, we would consider this a warning sign.

Have Earnings And Dividends Been Growing?

Companies with consistently growing earnings per share generally make the best dividend stocks, as they usually find it easier to grow dividends per share. If earnings fall far enough, the company could be forced to cut its dividend. That's why it's comforting to see Chubu Steel Plate's earnings have been skyrocketing, up 32% per annum for the past five years. Earnings have been growing quickly, but we're concerned dividend payments consumed most of the company's cash flow over the past year.

Many investors will assess a company's dividend performance by evaluating how much the dividend payments have changed over time. In the last 10 years, Chubu Steel Plate has lifted its dividend by approximately 33% a year on average. It's great to see earnings per share growing rapidly over several years, and dividends per share growing right along with it.

The Bottom Line

Is Chubu Steel Plate an attractive dividend stock, or better left on the shelf? We're glad to see the company has been improving its earnings per share while also paying out a low percentage of income. However, it's not great to see it paying out what we see as an uncomfortably high percentage of its cash flow. It might be worth researching if the company is reinvesting in growth projects that could grow earnings and dividends in the future, but for now we're not all that optimistic on its dividend prospects.

While it's tempting to invest in Chubu Steel Plate for the dividends alone, you should always be mindful of the risks involved. For example - Chubu Steel Plate has 1 warning sign we think you should be aware of.

Generally, we wouldn't recommend just buying the first dividend stock you see. Here's a curated list of interesting stocks that are strong dividend payers.
