Tokuyama (TSE:4043) Has Announced A Dividend Of ¥60.00

The board of Tokuyama Corporation (TSE:4043) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥60.00 per share on the 25th of June. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 2.9%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Tokuyama's Future Dividend Projections Appear Well Covered By Earnings

Impressive dividend yields are good, but this doesn't matter much if the payments can't be sustained. However, Tokuyama's earnings easily cover the dividend. This means that most of its earnings are being retained to grow the business.

Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 15.1% over the next year. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 36% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Tokuyama Is Still Building Its Track Record

It is great to see that Tokuyama has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. The annual payment during the last 9 years was ¥20.00 in 2016, and the most recent fiscal year payment was ¥120.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 22% over that duration. It is always nice to see strong dividend growth, but with such a short payment history we wouldn't be inclined to rely on it until a longer track record can be developed.

The Dividend's Growth Prospects Are Limited

The company's investors will be pleased to have been receiving dividend income for some time. Earnings per share has been crawling upwards at 3.4% per year. If Tokuyama is struggling to find viable investments, it always has the option to increase its payout ratio to pay more to shareholders.

In Summary

Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. The dividend has been at reasonable levels historically, but that hasn't translated into a consistent payment. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. Companies that are growing earnings tend to be the best dividend stocks over the long term.
