Menicon Co., Ltd. (TSE:7780) Stocks Pounded By 26% But Not Lagging Market On Growth Or Pricing
Menicon Co., Ltd. (TSE:7780) shareholders that were waiting for something to happen have been dealt a blow with a 26% share price drop in the last month. Instead of being rewarded, shareholders who have already held through the last twelve months are now sitting on a 44% share price drop.
Although its price has dipped substantially, given close to half the companies in Japan have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") below 14x, you may still consider Menicon as a stock to avoid entirely with its 23.9x P/E ratio. However, the P/E might be quite high for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.
Menicon hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining earnings compare poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth on average. One possibility is that the P/E is high because investors think this poor earnings performance will turn the corner. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like Menicon's to be considered reasonable.
If we review the last year of earnings, dishearteningly the company's profits fell to the tune of 36%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with EPS growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.
Turning to the outlook, the next three years should generate growth of 22% per year as estimated by the five analysts watching the company. With the market only predicted to deliver 10% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger earnings result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Menicon's P/E sits above the majority of other companies. Apparently shareholders aren't keen to offload something that is potentially eyeing a more prosperous future.
The Bottom Line On Menicon's P/E
Menicon's shares may have retreated, but its P/E is still flying high. It's argued the price-to-earnings ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.
We've established that Menicon maintains its high P/E on the strength of its forecast growth being higher than the wider market, as expected. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident future earnings aren't under threat. It's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
