Monex Group, Inc.'s (TSE:8698) Price Is Right But Growth Is Lacking After Shares Rocket 26%
Monex Group, Inc. (TSE:8698) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 26% share price jump in the last month. The last 30 days bring the annual gain to a very sharp 26%.
In spite of the firm bounce in price, Monex Group may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 10.9x, since almost half of all companies in Japan have P/E ratios greater than 14x and even P/E's higher than 21x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
Monex Group certainly has been doing a good job lately as it's been growing earnings more than most other companies. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

In order to justify its P/E ratio, Monex Group would need to produce sluggish growth that's trailing the market.
If we review the last year of earnings growth, the company posted a terrific increase of 322%. Despite this strong recent growth, it's still struggling to catch up as its three-year EPS frustratingly shrank by 20% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to slump, contracting by 5.3% each year during the coming three years according to the three analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the broader market is forecast to expand by 9.8% each year, which paints a poor picture.
With this information, we are not surprised that Monex Group is trading at a P/E lower than the market. However, shrinking earnings are unlikely to lead to a stable P/E over the longer term. Even just maintaining these prices could be difficult to achieve as the weak outlook is weighing down the shares.
What We Can Learn From Monex Group's P/E?
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Monex Group's P/E close to the market median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Monex Group maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its forecast for sliding earnings, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. Unless these conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
