Japan Investment Adviser (TSE:7172) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At ¥44.00

Japan Investment Adviser Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:7172) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥44.00 on 27th of March. This will take the dividend yield to an attractive 4.1%, providing a nice boost to shareholder returns.

Japan Investment Adviser's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. However, prior to this announcement, Japan Investment Adviser was quite comfortably covering its dividend with earnings and it was paying more than 75% of its free cash flow to shareholders. The business is earning enough to make the dividend feasible, but the cash payout ratio of 86% shows that most of the cash is going back to the shareholders, which could constrain growth prospects going forward.

The next year is set to see EPS grow by 30.7%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 36% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. Since 2015, the annual payment back then was ¥5.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥88.00. This works out to be a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of approximately 33% a year over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Achieve

With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Japan Investment Adviser hasn't seen much change in its earnings per share over the last five years. If Japan Investment Adviser is struggling to find viable investments, it always has the option to increase its payout ratio to pay more to shareholders.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The company hasn't been paying a very consistent dividend over time, despite only paying out a small portion of earnings. This company is not in the top tier of income providing stocks.

Market movements attest to how highly valued a consistent dividend policy is compared to one which is more unpredictable. Meanwhile, despite the importance of dividend payments, they are not the only factors our readers should know when assessing a company.
