SPRIX Inc.'s (TSE:7030) investors are due to receive a payment of ¥19.00 per share on 29th of December. This means the dividend yield will be fairly typical at 2.9%.
SPRIX's Projected Earnings Seem Likely To Cover Future Distributions
While it is always good to see a solid dividend yield, we should also consider whether the payment is feasible. Prior to this announcement, SPRIX's dividend made up quite a large proportion of earnings but only 67% of free cash flows. This leaves plenty of cash for reinvestment into the business.
The next year is set to see EPS grow by 19.1%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the payout ratio could be 68% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

SPRIX Doesn't Have A Long Payment History
It is great to see that SPRIX has been paying a stable dividend for a number of years now, however we want to be a bit cautious about whether this will remain true through a full economic cycle. Since 2020, the annual payment back then was ¥30.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥38.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 4.8% per annum over that time. Modest dividend growth is good to see, especially with the payments being relatively stable. However, the payment history is relatively short and we wouldn't want to rely on this dividend too much.
Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By
Investors who have held shares in the company for the past few years will be happy with the dividend income they have received. Let's not jump to conclusions as things might not be as good as they appear on the surface. It's not great to see that SPRIX's earnings per share has fallen at approximately 5.5% per year over the past five years. If earnings continue declining, the company may have to make the difficult choice of reducing the dividend or even stopping it completely - the opposite of dividend growth. Earnings are predicted to grow over the next year, but we would remain cautious until a track record of earnings growth is established.
Our Thoughts On SPRIX's Dividend
Overall, we don't think this company makes a great dividend stock, even though the dividend wasn't cut this year. In the past, the payments have been unstable, but over the short term the dividend could be reliable, with the company generating enough cash to cover it. We don't think SPRIX is a great stock to add to your portfolio if income is your focus.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. Are management backing themselves to deliver performance?
