JANOME's (TSE:6445) Dividend Will Be ¥20.00

JANOME Corporation (TSE:6445) has announced that it will pay a dividend of ¥20.00 per share on the 25th of November. This makes the dividend yield 4.6%, which is above the industry average.

JANOME's Projections Indicate Future Payments May Be Unsustainable

We like to see robust dividend yields, but that doesn't matter if the payment isn't sustainable. The last payment made up 83% of earnings, but cash flows were much higher. In general, cash flows are more important than earnings, so we are comfortable that the dividend will be sustainable going forward, especially with so much cash left over for reinvestment.

EPS is set to fall by 5.5% over the next 12 months if recent trends continue. If the dividend continues along the path it has been on recently, the payout ratio in 12 months could be 115%, which is definitely a bit high to be sustainable going forward.

JANOME Is Still Building Its Track Record

The dividend's track record has been pretty solid, but with only 9 years of history we want to see a few more years of history before making any solid conclusions. Since 2016, the annual payment back then was ¥10.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ¥55.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 21% per annum over that time. We're not overly excited about the relatively short history of dividend payments, however the dividend is growing at a nice rate and we might take a closer look.

Dividend Growth May Be Hard To Come By

Some investors will be chomping at the bit to buy some of the company's stock based on its dividend history. However, things aren't all that rosy. It's not great to see that JANOME's earnings per share has fallen at approximately 5.5% per year over the past five years. A modest decline in earnings isn't great, and it makes it quite unlikely that the dividend will grow in the future unless that trend can be reversed.

In Summary

Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. The payments haven't been particularly stable and we don't see huge growth potential, but with the dividend well covered by cash flows it could prove to be reliable over the short term. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.

Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach. At the same time, there are other factors our readers should be conscious of before pouring capital into a stock. To that end, JANOME has 2 warning signs (and 1 which is significant) we think you should know about. Is JANOME not quite the opportunity you were looking for?
