Investors Appear Satisfied With LTS, Inc.'s (TSE:6560) Prospects As Shares Rocket 29%
LTS, Inc. (TSE:6560) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 29% share price jump in the last month. Not all shareholders will be feeling jubilant, since the share price is still down a very disappointing 33% in the last twelve months.
After such a large jump in price, LTS' price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 21.2x might make it look like a strong sell right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's so lofty.
With earnings growth that's exceedingly strong of late, LTS has been doing very well. The P/E is probably high because investors think this strong earnings growth will be enough to outperform the broader market in the near future. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a pretty hefty price for no particular reason.

Although there are no analyst estimates available for LTS, take a look at this free data-rich visualisation to see how the company stacks up on earnings, revenue and cash flow.Is There Enough Growth For LTS?
There's an inherent assumption that a company should far outperform the market for P/E ratios like LTS' to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew earnings per share by an impressive 57% last year. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 59% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Comparing that to the market, which is only predicted to deliver 12% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised earnings results.
In light of this, it's understandable that LTS' P/E sits above the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting this strong growth to continue and are willing to pay more for the stock.
The Final Word
LTS' P/E is flying high just like its stock has during the last month. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.
As we suspected, our examination of LTS revealed its three-year earnings trends are contributing to its high P/E, given they look better than current market expectations. Right now shareholders are comfortable with the P/E as they are quite confident earnings aren't under threat. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price falling strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
It is also worth noting that we have found 2 warning signs for LTS (1 is significant!) that you need to take into consideration.
