Fewer Investors Than Expected Jumping On Altech Co., Ltd. (TSE:9972)
There wouldn't be many who think Altech Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:9972) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 0.2x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Trade Distributors industry in Japan is similar at about 0.3x. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

How Has Altech Performed Recently?
Revenue has risen firmly for Altech recently, which is pleasing to see. It might be that many expect the respectable revenue performance to wane, which has kept the P/S from rising. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's not quite in favour.
We don't have analyst forecasts, but you can see how recent trends are setting up the company for the future by checking out our free report on Altech's earnings, revenue and cash flow.Do Revenue Forecasts Match The P/S Ratio?
The only time you'd be comfortable seeing a P/S like Altech's is when the company's growth is tracking the industry closely.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a decent 9.3% gain to the company's revenues. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 38% overall rise in revenue, aided somewhat by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have definitely welcomed those medium-term rates of revenue growth.
Comparing that to the industry, which is only predicted to deliver 1.1% growth in the next 12 months, the company's momentum is stronger based on recent medium-term annualised revenue results.
With this information, we find it interesting that Altech is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It may be that most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.
The Bottom Line On Altech's P/S
Using the price-to-sales ratio alone to determine if you should sell your stock isn't sensible, however it can be a practical guide to the company's future prospects.
To our surprise, Altech revealed its three-year revenue trends aren't contributing to its P/S as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current industry expectations. There could be some unobserved threats to revenue preventing the P/S ratio from matching this positive performance. At least the risk of a price drop looks to be subdued if recent medium-term revenue trends continue, but investors seem to think future revenue could see some volatility.
