Organo Corporation's (TSE:6368) Shares Climb 28% But Its Business Is Yet to Catch Up
Organo Corporation (TSE:6368) shares have continued their recent momentum with a 28% gain in the last month alone. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 49% in the last year.
Following the firm bounce in price, Organo's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 20.1x might make it look like a sell right now compared to the market in Japan, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios below 13x and even P/E's below 9x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's as high as it is.
Recent times have been advantageous for Organo as its earnings have been rising faster than most other companies. It seems that many are expecting the strong earnings performance to persist, which has raised the P/E. If not, then existing shareholders might be a little nervous about the viability of the share price.

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as high as Organo's is when the company's growth is on track to outshine the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 62% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 158% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.
Looking ahead now, EPS is anticipated to climb by 5.5% per year during the coming three years according to the four analysts following the company. Meanwhile, the rest of the market is forecast to expand by 10% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it concerning that Organo is trading at a P/E higher than the market. Apparently many investors in the company are way more bullish than analysts indicate and aren't willing to let go of their stock at any price. Only the boldest would assume these prices are sustainable as this level of earnings growth is likely to weigh heavily on the share price eventually.
The Bottom Line On Organo's P/E
The large bounce in Organo's shares has lifted the company's P/E to a fairly high level. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Our examination of Organo's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior earnings outlook isn't impacting its high P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. Right now we are increasingly uncomfortable with the high P/E as the predicted future earnings aren't likely to support such positive sentiment for long. Unless these conditions improve markedly, it's very challenging to accept these prices as being reasonable.
