Sodick Co., Ltd. (TSE:6143) Stock Rockets 29% But Many Are Still Ignoring The Company
Sodick Co., Ltd. (TSE:6143) shares have had a really impressive month, gaining 29% after a shaky period beforehand. Unfortunately, despite the strong performance over the last month, the full year gain of 5.6% isn't as attractive.
Even after such a large jump in price, you could still be forgiven for feeling indifferent about Sodick's P/S ratio of 0.6x, since the median price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio for the Machinery industry in Japan is also close to 0.7x. While this might not raise any eyebrows, if the P/S ratio is not justified investors could be missing out on a potential opportunity or ignoring looming disappointment.

What Does Sodick's Recent Performance Look Like?
While the industry has experienced revenue growth lately, Sodick's revenue has gone into reverse gear, which is not great. Perhaps the market is expecting its poor revenue performance to improve, keeping the P/S from dropping. You'd really hope so, otherwise you're paying a relatively elevated price for a company with this sort of growth profile.

In order to justify its P/S ratio, Sodick would need to produce growth that's similar to the industry.
Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 9.9%. Unfortunately, that's brought it right back to where it started three years ago with revenue growth being virtually non-existent overall during that time. Accordingly, shareholders probably wouldn't have been overly satisfied with the unstable medium-term growth rates.
Looking ahead now, revenue is anticipated to climb by 12% during the coming year according to the two analysts following the company. That's shaping up to be materially higher than the 5.7% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we find it interesting that Sodick is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. Apparently some shareholders are skeptical of the forecasts and have been accepting lower selling prices.
What We Can Learn From Sodick's P/S?
Sodick's stock has a lot of momentum behind it lately, which has brought its P/S level with the rest of the industry. We'd say the price-to-sales ratio's power isn't primarily as a valuation instrument but rather to gauge current investor sentiment and future expectations.
Looking at Sodick's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't giving the boost to its P/S that we would've expected. When we see a strong revenue outlook, with growth outpacing the industry, we can only assume potential uncertainty around these figures are what might be placing slight pressure on the P/S ratio. However, if you agree with the analysts' forecasts, you may be able to pick up the stock at an attractive price.
