The board of The Chiba Bank, Ltd. (TSE:8331) has announced that it will be paying its dividend of ¥18.00 on the 5th of December, an increased payment from last year's comparable dividend. This makes the dividend yield about the same as the industry average at 3.1%.

Chiba Bank's Earnings Will Easily Cover The Distributions

We like to see a healthy dividend yield, but that is only helpful to us if the payment can continue.

Chiba Bank has a long history of paying out dividends, with its current track record at a minimum of 10 years. Based on Chiba Bank's last earnings report, the payout ratio is at a decent 36%, meaning that the company is able to pay out its dividend with a bit of room to spare.

Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 11.7%. Assuming the dividend continues along recent trends, we think the future payout ratio could be 38% by next year, which is in a pretty sustainable range.

Dividend Volatility

The company has a long dividend track record, but it doesn't look great with cuts in the past. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥12.00 in 2014 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥36.00. This implies that the company grew its distributions at a yearly rate of about 12% over that duration. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.

Chiba Bank Could Grow Its Dividend

Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. Chiba Bank has impressed us by growing EPS at 6.6% per year over the past five years. With a decent amount of growth and a low payout ratio, we think this bodes well for Chiba Bank's prospects of growing its dividend payments in the future.

Our Thoughts On Chiba Bank's Dividend

Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. The payout ratio looks good, but unfortunately the company's dividend track record isn't stellar. This looks like it could be a good dividend stock going forward, but we would note that the payout ratio has been at higher levels in the past so it could happen again.

It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company.
