Daido Metal (TSE:7245) Will Pay A Larger Dividend Than Last Year At ¥12.00
Daido Metal Co., Ltd.'s (TSE:7245) dividend will be increasing from last year's payment of the same period to ¥12.00 on 8th of December. This takes the annual payment to 2.5% of the current stock price, which is about average for the industry.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Daido Metal's stock price has increased by 42% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.
Daido Metal's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Based on the last payment, Daido Metal was paying only paying out a fraction of earnings, but the payment was a massive 155% of cash flows. A cash payout ratio this high could put the dividend under pressure and force the company to reduce it in the future if it were to run into tough times.
Over the next year, EPS is forecast to expand by 21.9%. If the dividend continues along recent trends, we estimate the payout ratio will be 30%, which is in the range that makes us comfortable with the sustainability of the dividend.

Dividend Volatility
While the company has been paying a dividend for a long time, it has cut the dividend at least once in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥20.00 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥24.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 1.8% per annum over that time. It's encouraging to see some dividend growth, but the dividend has been cut at least once, and the size of the cut would eliminate most of the growth anyway, which makes this less attractive as an income investment.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
Given that the dividend has been cut in the past, we need to check if earnings are growing and if that might lead to stronger dividends in the future. It's encouraging to see that Daido Metal has been growing its earnings per share at 21% a year over the past five years. Rapid earnings growth and a low payout ratio suggest this company has been effectively reinvesting in its business. Should that continue, this company could have a bright future.
In Summary
Overall, this is probably not a great income stock, even though the dividend is being raised at the moment. With cash flows lacking, it is difficult to see how the company can sustain a dividend payment. We would probably look elsewhere for an income investment.
Companies possessing a stable dividend policy will likely enjoy greater investor interest than those suffering from a more inconsistent approach.
