Daido Metal (TSE:7245) Has Announced That It Will Be Increasing Its Dividend To ¥12.00
Daido Metal Co., Ltd. (TSE:7245) has announced that it will be increasing its dividend from last year's comparable payment on the 8th of December to ¥12.00. The payment will take the dividend yield to 2.5%, which is in line with the average for the industry.
While the dividend yield is important for income investors, it is also important to consider any large share price moves, as this will generally outweigh any gains from distributions. Investors will be pleased to see that Daido Metal's stock price has increased by 59% in the last 3 months, which is good for shareholders and can also explain a decrease in the dividend yield.
Daido Metal's Payment Could Potentially Have Solid Earnings Coverage
We like a dividend to be consistent over the long term, so checking whether it is sustainable is important. Before making this announcement, Daido Metal was paying a whopping 155% as a dividend, but this only made up 30% of its overall earnings. The business might be trying to strike a balance between returning cash to shareholders and reinvesting back into the business, but this high of a payout ratio could definitely force the dividend to be cut if the company runs into a bit of a tough spot.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 21.9% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 30% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.

Dividend Volatility
The company's dividend history has been marked by instability, with at least one cut in the last 10 years. The dividend has gone from an annual total of ¥20.00 in 2015 to the most recent total annual payment of ¥24.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 1.8% per annum over that time. Modest growth in the dividend is good to see, but we think this is offset by historical cuts to the payments. It is hard to live on a dividend income if the company's earnings are not consistent.
The Dividend Looks Likely To Grow
With a relatively unstable dividend, it's even more important to see if earnings per share is growing. Daido Metal has seen EPS rising for the last five years, at 21% per annum. Earnings per share is growing at a solid clip, and the payout ratio is low which we think is an ideal combination in a dividend stock as the company can quite easily raise the dividend in the future.
Our Thoughts On Daido Metal's Dividend
In summary, while it's always good to see the dividend being raised, we don't think Daido Metal's payments are rock solid. While the low payout ratio is a redeeming feature, this is offset by the minimal cash to cover the payments. Overall, we don't think this company has the makings of a good income stock.
Investors generally tend to favour companies with a consistent, stable dividend policy as opposed to those operating an irregular one.
