Did you know there are some financial metrics that can provide clues of a potential multi-bagger? Firstly, we'll want to see a proven return on capital employed (ROCE) that is increasing, and secondly, an expanding base of capital employed. This shows us that it's a compounding machine, able to continually reinvest its earnings back into the business and generate higher returns. That's why when we briefly looked at Nichirin's (TSE:5184) ROCE trend, we were pretty happy with what we saw.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
For those that aren't sure what ROCE is, it measures the amount of pre-tax profits a company can generate from the capital employed in its business. To calculate this metric for Nichirin, this is the formula:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.13 = JP¥9.2b ÷ (JP¥83b - JP¥14b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2024).
Therefore, Nichirin has an ROCE of 13%. On its own, that's a standard return, however it's much better than the 6.2% generated by the Auto Components industry.

The Trend Of ROCE
While the current returns on capital are decent, they haven't changed much. The company has employed 51% more capital in the last five years, and the returns on that capital have remained stable at 13%. Since 13% is a moderate ROCE though, it's good to see a business can continue to reinvest at these decent rates of return. Stable returns in this ballpark can be unexciting, but if they can be maintained over the long run, they often provide nice rewards to shareholders.
The Bottom Line
In the end, Nichirin has proven its ability to adequately reinvest capital at good rates of return. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 213% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while investors seem to be recognizing these promising trends, we still believe the stock deserves further research.
