News Flash: Analysts Just Made A Massive Upgrade To Their A2A S.p.A. (BIT:A2A) Forecasts
A2A S.p.A. (BIT:A2A) shareholders will have a reason to smile today, with the analysts making substantial upgrades to this year's forecasts. The consensus statutory numbers for both revenue and earnings per share (EPS) increased, with their view clearly much more bullish on the company's business prospects.
Following the upgrade, the most recent consensus for A2A from its five analysts is for revenues of €18b in 2022 which, if met, would be a huge 23% increase on its sales over the past 12 months. Statutory earnings per share are presumed to ascend 13% to €0.15. Before this latest update, the analysts had been forecasting revenues of €14b and earnings per share (EPS) of €0.12 in 2022. So we can see there's been a pretty clear increase in analyst sentiment in recent times, with both revenues and earnings per share receiving a decent lift in the latest estimates.

Although the analysts have upgraded their earnings estimates, there was no change to the consensus price target of €1.88, suggesting that the forecast performance does not have a long term impact on the company's valuation. Fixating on a single price target can be unwise though, since the consensus target is effectively the average of analyst price targets. As a result, some investors like to look at the range of estimates to see if there are any diverging opinions on the company's valuation. There are some variant perceptions on A2A, with the most bullish analyst valuing it at €2.50 and the most bearish at €1.50 per share. These price targets show that analysts do have some differing views on the business, but the estimates do not vary enough to suggest to us that some are betting on wild success or utter failure.
Taking a look at the bigger picture now, one of the ways we can understand these forecasts is to see how they compare to both past performance and industry growth estimates. The analysts are definitely expecting A2A's growth to accelerate, with the forecast 50% annualised growth to the end of 2022 ranking favourably alongside historical growth of 15% per annum over the past five years. Compare this with other companies in the same industry, which are forecast to grow their revenue 2.7% annually. It seems obvious that, while the growth outlook is brighter than the recent past, the analysts also expect A2A to grow faster than the wider industry.
The Bottom Line
The biggest takeaway for us from these new estimates is that analysts upgraded their earnings per share estimates, with improved earnings power expected for this year. They also upgraded their revenue estimates for this year, and sales are expected to grow faster than the wider market. The lack of change in the price target is puzzling, but with a serious upgrade to this year's earnings expectations, it might be time to take another look at A2A.
