Siav S.p.A.'s (BIT:SIAV) Share Price Boosted 27% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Siav S.p.A. (BIT:SIAV) shareholders are no doubt pleased to see that the share price has bounced 27% in the last month, although it is still struggling to make up recently lost ground. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 15% over that time.
Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies operating in Italy's Software industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 1.4x, you may still consider Siav as an attractive investment with its 0.6x P/S ratio. However, the P/S might be low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

What Does Siav's Recent Performance Look Like?
Recent times haven't been great for Siav as its revenue has been rising slower than most other companies. The P/S ratio is probably low because investors think this lacklustre revenue performance isn't going to get any better. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping revenue doesn't get any worse and that you could pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the industry for P/S ratios like Siav's to be considered reasonable.
Taking a look back first, we see that there was hardly any revenue growth to speak of for the company over the past year. The longer-term trend has been no better as the company has no revenue growth to show for over the last three years either. So it seems apparent to us that the company has struggled to grow revenue meaningfully over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the two analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 8.9% per annum over the next three years. With the industry predicted to deliver 14% growth per annum, the company is positioned for a weaker revenue result.
In light of this, it's understandable that Siav's P/S sits below the majority of other companies. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Siav's P/S
Despite Siav's share price climbing recently, its P/S still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Siav maintains its low P/S on the weakness of its forecast growth being lower than the wider industry, as expected. Shareholders' pessimism on the revenue prospects for the company seems to be the main contributor to the depressed P/S. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
It's always necessary to consider the ever-present spectre of investment risk. We've identified 4 warning signs with Siav (at least 3 which are a bit concerning), and understanding them should be part of your investment process.
Of course, profitable companies with a history of great earnings growth are generally safer bets. So you may wish to see this free collection of other companies that have reasonable P/E ratios and have grown earnings strongly.
