The Market Lifts Portobello S.p.A. (BIT:POR) Shares 31% But It Can Do More

Portobello S.p.A. (BIT:POR) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 31% share price jump in the last month. But the last month did very little to improve the 64% share price decline over the last year.

Even after such a large jump in price, when close to half the companies operating in Italy's Media industry have price-to-sales ratios (or "P/S") above 0.6x, you may still consider Portobello as an enticing stock to check out with its 0.1x P/S ratio. Nonetheless, we'd need to dig a little deeper to determine if there is a rational basis for the reduced P/S.

What Does Portobello's Recent Performance Look Like?

Portobello hasn't been tracking well recently as its declining revenue compares poorly to other companies, which have seen some growth in their revenues on average. It seems that many are expecting the poor revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the P/S ratio. If you still like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Keen to find out how analysts think Portobello's future stacks up against the industry? In that case, our free report is a great place to start.

What Are Revenue Growth Metrics Telling Us About The Low P/S?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/S as low as Portobello's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the industry.

Taking a look back first, the company's revenue growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 29%. The last three years don't look nice either as the company has shrunk revenue by 16% in aggregate. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing revenue over that time.

Shifting to the future, estimates from the lone analyst covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 14% each year over the next three years. With the industry only predicted to deliver 6.8% each year, the company is positioned for a stronger revenue result.

With this in consideration, we find it intriguing that Portobello's P/S sits behind most of its industry peers. It looks like most investors are not convinced at all that the company can achieve future growth expectations.

The Final Word

The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Portobello's P/S close to the industry median. It's argued the price-to-sales ratio is an inferior measure of value within certain industries, but it can be a powerful business sentiment indicator.

Portobello's analyst forecasts revealed that its superior revenue outlook isn't contributing to its P/S anywhere near as much as we would have predicted. The reason for this depressed P/S could potentially be found in the risks the market is pricing in. It appears the market could be anticipating revenue instability, because these conditions should normally provide a boost to the share price.

We don't want to rain on the parade too much, but we did also find 3 warning signs for Portobello (2 are potentially serious!) that you need to be mindful of.
