Should Biesse (BIT:BSS) Be Disappointed With Their 97% Profit?

When we invest, we're generally looking for stocks that outperform the market average. And the truth is, you can make significant gains if you buy good quality businesses at the right price. For example, the Biesse S.p.A. (BIT:BSS) share price is up 97% in the last 5 years, clearly besting the market return of around 0.05% (ignoring dividends). However, more recent returns haven't been as impressive as that, with the stock returning just 31% in the last year.

While Biesse made a small profit, in the last year, we think that the market is probably more focussed on the top line growth at the moment. As a general rule, we think this kind of company is more comparable to loss-making stocks, since the actual profit is so low. For shareholders to have confidence a company will grow profits significantly, it must grow revenue.

In the last 5 years Biesse saw its revenue grow at 5.1% per year. Put simply, that growth rate fails to impress. While it's hard to say just how much value the company added over five years, the annualised share price gain of 14% seems about right. The business could be one worth watching but we generally prefer faster revenue growth.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Biesse's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. Arguably the TSR is a more complete return calculation because it accounts for the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested), along with the hypothetical value of any discounted capital that have been offered to shareholders. Dividends have been really beneficial for Biesse shareholders, and that cash payout contributed to why its TSR of 112%, over the last 5 years, is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Biesse has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 31% in the last twelve months. Since the one-year TSR is better than the five-year TSR (the latter coming in at 16% per year), it would seem that the stock's performance has improved in recent times. In the best case scenario, this may hint at some real business momentum, implying that now could be a great time to delve deeper. It's always interesting to track share price performance over the longer term. But to understand Biesse better, we need to consider many other factors.
