Sogefi S.p.A. (BIT:SGF) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 49%

Published
BIT:SGF

Despite an already strong run, Sogefi S.p.A. (BIT:SGF) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 49% in the last thirty days. The annual gain comes to 146% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.

Even after such a large jump in price, Sogefi's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 5.1x might still make it look like a strong buy right now compared to the market in Italy, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 15x and even P/E's above 28x are quite common. However, the P/E might be quite low for a reason and it requires further investigation to determine if it's justified.

Recent times have been quite advantageous for Sogefi as its earnings have been rising very briskly. It might be that many expect the strong earnings performance to degrade substantially, which has repressed the P/E. If that doesn't eventuate, then existing shareholders have reason to be quite optimistic about the future direction of the share price.

Does Growth Match The Low P/E?

Sogefi's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's expected to deliver very poor growth or even falling earnings, and importantly, perform much worse than the market.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 76% gain to the company's bottom line. However, the latest three year period hasn't been as great in aggregate as it didn't manage to provide any growth at all. So it appears to us that the company has had a mixed result in terms of growing earnings over that time.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 21% over the next year, materially higher than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we can see why Sogefi is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently many shareholders weren't comfortable holding on to something they believe will continue to trail the bourse.

What We Can Learn From Sogefi's P/E?

Even after such a strong price move, Sogefi's P/E still trails the rest of the market significantly. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

We've established that Sogefi maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its recent three-year growth being lower than the wider market forecast, as expected. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/E as they concede future earnings probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. If recent medium-term earnings trends continue, it's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
