By buying an index fund, investors can approximate the average market return. But if you buy good businesses at attractive prices, your portfolio returns could exceed the average market return. For example, the Hagar hf (ICE:HAGA) share price is up 51% in the last three years, clearly besting the market return of around 8.7% (not including dividends). On the other hand, the returns haven't been quite so good recently, with shareholders up just 20%.

In his essay The Superinvestors of Graham-and-Doddsville Warren Buffett described how share prices do not always rationally reflect the value of a business. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).

Over the last three years, Hagar hf failed to grow earnings per share, which fell 11% (annualized).

Thus, it seems unlikely that the market is focussed on EPS growth at the moment. Therefore, we think it's worth considering other metrics as well.

It may well be that Hagar hf revenue growth rate of 19% over three years has convinced shareholders to believe in a brighter future. If the company is being managed for the long term good, today's shareholders might be right to hold on.

What about the Total Shareholder Return (TSR)?

We'd be remiss not to mention the difference between Hagar hf's total shareholder return (TSR) and its share price return. The TSR attempts to capture the value of dividends (as if they were reinvested) as well as any spin-offs or discounted capital raisings offered to shareholders. Its history of dividend payouts mean that Hagar hf's TSR of 58% over the last 3 years is better than the share price return.

A Different Perspective

It's good to see that Hagar hf has rewarded shareholders with a total shareholder return of 20% in the last twelve months. That's better than the annualised return of 7% over half a decade, implying that the company is doing better recently. Someone with an optimistic perspective could view the recent improvement in TSR as indicating that the business itself is getting better with time. I find it very interesting to look at share price over the long term as a proxy for business performance. But to truly gain insight, we need to consider other information, too.
