The Returns On Capital At TCI Express (NSE:TCIEXP) Don't Inspire Confidence
If we want to find a stock that could multiply over the long term, what are the underlying trends we should look for? Ideally, a business will show two trends; firstly a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and secondly, an increasing amount of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. Having said that, while the ROCE is currently high for TCI Express (NSE:TCIEXP), we aren't jumping out of our chairs because returns are decreasing.
Return On Capital Employed (ROCE): What Is It?
For those who don't know, ROCE is a measure of a company's yearly pre-tax profit (its return), relative to the capital employed in the business. The formula for this calculation on TCI Express is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.30 = ₹1.8b ÷ (₹7.1b - ₹1.1b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to December 2022).
Therefore, TCI Express has an ROCE of 30%. That's a fantastic return and not only that, it outpaces the average of 17% earned by companies in a similar industry.

What Can We Tell From TCI Express' ROCE Trend?
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at TCI Express doesn't inspire confidence. Historically returns on capital were even higher at 44%, but they have dropped over the last five years. Although, given both revenue and the amount of assets employed in the business have increased, it could suggest the company is investing in growth, and the extra capital has led to a short-term reduction in ROCE. If these investments prove successful, this can bode very well for long term stock performance.
On a related note, TCI Express has decreased its current liabilities to 16% of total assets. That could partly explain why the ROCE has dropped. Effectively this means their suppliers or short-term creditors are funding less of the business, which reduces some elements of risk. Some would claim this reduces the business' efficiency at generating ROCE since it is now funding more of the operations with its own money.
Our Take On TCI Express' ROCE
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for TCI Express. And the stock has done incredibly well with a 171% return over the last five years, so long term investors are no doubt ecstatic with that result. So while the underlying trends could already be accounted for by investors, we still think this stock is worth looking into further.
