Investors Still Aren't Entirely Convinced By Ritco Logistics Limited's (NSE:RITCO) Earnings Despite 28% Price Jump

Published
NSEI:RITCO

The Ritco Logistics Limited (NSE:RITCO) share price has done very well over the last month, posting an excellent gain of 28%. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 87% in the last year.

Although its price has surged higher, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 33x, you may still consider Ritco Logistics as an attractive investment with its 23.8x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

Ritco Logistics certainly has been doing a great job lately as it's been growing earnings at a really rapid pace. One possibility is that the P/E is low because investors think this strong earnings growth might actually underperform the broader market in the near future. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Is There Any Growth For Ritco Logistics?

There's an inherent assumption that a company should underperform the market for P/E ratios like Ritco Logistics' to be considered reasonable.

Retrospectively, the last year delivered an exceptional 34% gain to the company's bottom line. The latest three year period has also seen an excellent 439% overall rise in EPS, aided by its short-term performance. Accordingly, shareholders would have probably welcomed those medium-term rates of earnings growth.

This is in contrast to the rest of the market, which is expected to grow by 25% over the next year, materially lower than the company's recent medium-term annualised growth rates.

With this information, we find it odd that Ritco Logistics is trading at a P/E lower than the market. Apparently some shareholders believe the recent performance has exceeded its limits and have been accepting significantly lower selling prices.

The Key Takeaway

Despite Ritco Logistics' shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-earnings ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.

We've established that Ritco Logistics currently trades on a much lower than expected P/E since its recent three-year growth is higher than the wider market forecast. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

Having said that, be aware Ritco Logistics is showing 2 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those can't be ignored.
