These 4 Measures Indicate That Bharat Road Network (NSE:BRNL) Is Using Debt Extensively
Some say volatility, rather than debt, is the best way to think about risk as an investor, but Warren Buffett famously said that 'Volatility is far from synonymous with risk.' So it seems the smart money knows that debt - which is usually involved in bankruptcies - is a very important factor, when you assess how risky a company is. Why Does Debt Bring Risk?
Debt assists a business until the business has trouble paying it off, either with new capital or with free cash flow. The image below, which you can click on for greater detail, shows that Bharat Road Network had debt of ₹13.3b at the end of March 2024, a reduction from ₹14.1b over a year. On the flip side, it has ₹2.76b in cash leading to net debt of about ₹10.5b.
How Strong Is Bharat Road Network's Balance Sheet?
The latest balance sheet data shows that Bharat Road Network had liabilities of ₹11.7b due within a year, and liabilities of ₹12.8b falling due after that. Offsetting this, it had ₹2.76b in cash and ₹507.8m in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by ₹21.2b.
The deficiency here weighs heavily on the ₹4.50b company itself, as if a child were struggling under the weight of an enormous back-pack full of books, his sports gear, and a trumpet. So we'd watch its balance sheet closely, without a doubt. After all, Bharat Road Network would likely require a major re-capitalisation if it had to pay its creditors today.

Our View

But at least it's pretty decent at converting EBIT to free cash flow; that's encouraging. We should also note that Infrastructure industry companies like Bharat Road Network commonly do use debt without problems. Overall, we think it's fair to say that Bharat Road Network has enough debt that there are some real risks around the balance sheet. If all goes well, that should boost returns, but on the flip side, the risk of permanent capital loss is elevated by the debt.
