Cyient (NSE:CYIENT) Is Paying Out A Larger Dividend Than Last Year
Cyient Limited (NSE:CYIENT) has announced that it will be increasing its periodic dividend on the 18th of November to ₹12.00, which will be 20% higher than last year's comparable payment amount of ₹10.00. The payment will take the dividend yield to 1.5%, which is in line with the average for the industry.

Cyient's Payment Has Solid Earnings Coverage
We aren't too impressed by dividend yields unless they can be sustained over time. Prior to this announcement, Cyient's dividend was comfortably covered by both cash flow and earnings. This indicates that quite a large proportion of earnings is being invested back into the business.
Looking forward, earnings per share is forecast to rise by 89.1% over the next year. If the dividend continues on this path, the payout ratio could be 34% by next year, which we think can be pretty sustainable going forward.
Dividend Volatility
Although the company has a long dividend history, it has been cut at least once in the last 10 years. Since 2013, the annual payment back then was ₹4.00, compared to the most recent full-year payment of ₹26.00. This means that it has been growing its distributions at 21% per annum over that time. It is great to see strong growth in the dividend payments, but cuts are concerning as it may indicate the payout policy is too ambitious.
Cyient Could Grow Its Dividend
Growing earnings per share could be a mitigating factor when considering the past fluctuations in the dividend. Cyient has impressed us by growing EPS at 7.6% per year over the past five years. Earnings are on the uptrend, and it is only paying a small portion of those earnings to shareholders.
In Summary
Overall, this is a reasonable dividend, and it being raised is an added bonus. While the payout ratios are a good sign, we are less enthusiastic about the company's dividend record. Taking all of this into consideration, the dividend looks viable moving forward, but investors should be mindful that the company has pushed the boundaries of sustainability in the past and may do so again.
It's important to note that companies having a consistent dividend policy will generate greater investor confidence than those having an erratic one. Still, investors need to consider a host of other factors, apart from dividend payments, when analysing a company. For example, we've picked out 2 warning signs for Cyient that investors should know about before committing capital to this stock. Looking for more high-yielding dividend ideas?
