Sobha Limited's (NSE:SOBHA) Share Price Boosted 26% But Its Business Prospects Need A Lift Too
Sobha Limited (NSE:SOBHA) shareholders would be excited to see that the share price has had a great month, posting a 26% gain and recovering from prior weakness. The annual gain comes to 261% following the latest surge, making investors sit up and take notice.
Even after such a large jump in price, Sobha may still be sending bullish signals at the moment with its price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 4.3x, since almost half of all companies in the Real Estate industry in India have P/S ratios greater than 6.6x and even P/S higher than 19x are not unusual. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/S at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

What Does Sobha's P/S Mean For Shareholders?
Sobha could be doing better as it's been growing revenue less than most other companies lately. It seems that many are expecting the uninspiring revenue performance to persist, which has repressed the growth of the P/S ratio. If this is the case, then existing shareholders will probably struggle to get excited about the future direction of the share price.

Sobha's P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the industry.
Taking a look back first, we see that the company grew revenue by an impressive 19% last year. The strong recent performance means it was also able to grow revenue by 44% in total over the last three years. So we can start by confirming that the company has done a great job of growing revenue over that time.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 29% over the next year. That's shaping up to be materially lower than the 40% growth forecast for the broader industry.
With this information, we can see why Sobha is trading at a P/S lower than the industry. It seems most investors are expecting to see limited future growth and are only willing to pay a reduced amount for the stock.
The Bottom Line On Sobha's P/S
The latest share price surge wasn't enough to lift Sobha's P/S close to the industry median. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-sales ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
As we suspected, our examination of Sobha's analyst forecasts revealed that its inferior revenue outlook is contributing to its low P/S. Right now shareholders are accepting the low P/S as they concede future revenue probably won't provide any pleasant surprises. It's hard to see the share price rising strongly in the near future under these circumstances.
