Is Keystone Realtors (NSE:RUSTOMJEE) A Risky Investment?

When Is Debt A Problem?

Generally speaking, debt only becomes a real problem when a company can't easily pay it off, either by raising capital or with its own cash flow. In the worst case scenario, a company can go bankrupt if it cannot pay its creditors. However, a more frequent (but still costly) occurrence is where a company must issue shares at bargain-basement prices, permanently diluting shareholders, just to shore up its balance sheet. Of course, debt can be an important tool in businesses, particularly capital heavy businesses. The first thing to do when considering how much debt a business uses is to look at its cash and debt together.

You can click the graphic below for the historical numbers, but it shows that Keystone Realtors had ₹9.04b of debt in March 2025, down from ₹10.8b, one year before. On the flip side, it has ₹8.54b in cash leading to net debt of about ₹506.5m.

A Look At Keystone Realtors' Liabilities

We can see from the most recent balance sheet that Keystone Realtors had liabilities of ₹33.4b falling due within a year, and liabilities of ₹5.25b due beyond that. Offsetting this, it had ₹8.54b in cash and ₹2.55b in receivables that were due within 12 months. So its liabilities outweigh the sum of its cash and (near-term) receivables by ₹27.6b.

While this might seem like a lot, it is not so bad since Keystone Realtors has a market capitalization of ₹72.0b, and so it could probably strengthen its balance sheet by raising capital if it needed to. But it's clear that we should definitely closely examine whether it can manage its debt without dilution. Carrying virtually no net debt, Keystone Realtors has a very light debt load indeed.

We use two main ratios to inform us about debt levels relative to earnings. The first is net debt divided by earnings before interest, tax, depreciation, and amortization (EBITDA), while the second is how many times its earnings before interest and tax (EBIT) covers its interest expense (or its interest cover, for short). This way, we consider both the absolute quantum of the debt, as well as the interest rates paid on it.

Looking at its net debt to EBITDA of 0.23 and interest cover of 3.9 times, it seems to us that Keystone Realtors is probably using debt in a pretty reasonable way. So we'd recommend keeping a close eye on the impact financing costs are having on the business. Our View

Keystone Realtors's conversion of EBIT to free cash flow suggests it can handle its debt as easily as Cristiano Ronaldo could score a goal against an under 14's goalkeeper. But, on a more sombre note, we are a little concerned by its interest cover. Zooming out, Keystone Realtors seems to use debt quite reasonably; and that gets the nod from us. While debt does bring risk, when used wisely it can also bring a higher return on equity.
