Investors in Prestige Estates Projects (NSE:PRESTIGE) have seen fantastic returns of 771% over the past five years
For many, the main point of investing in the stock market is to achieve spectacular returns. And we've seen some truly amazing gains over the years. Just think about the savvy investors who held Prestige Estates Projects Limited (NSE:PRESTIGE) shares for the last five years, while they gained 762%. If that doesn't get you thinking about long term investing, we don't know what will. It's also good to see the share price up 30% over the last quarter. But this move may well have been assisted by the reasonably buoyant market (up 16% in 90 days). Anyone who held for that rewarding ride would probably be keen to talk about it.
Let's take a look at the underlying fundamentals over the longer term, and see if they've been consistent with shareholders returns.
To paraphrase Benjamin Graham: Over the short term the market is a voting machine, but over the long term it's a weighing machine. One way to examine how market sentiment has changed over time is to look at the interaction between a company's share price and its earnings per share (EPS).
During five years of share price growth, Prestige Estates Projects achieved compound earnings per share (EPS) growth of 0.4% per year. This EPS growth is slower than the share price growth of 54% per year, over the same period. So it's fair to assume the market has a higher opinion of the business than it did five years ago. That's not necessarily surprising considering the five-year track record of earnings growth. This optimism is visible in its fairly high P/E ratio of 135.12.

What About Dividends?
When looking at investment returns, it is important to consider the difference between total shareholder return (TSR) and share price return. Whereas the share price return only reflects the change in the share price, the TSR includes the value of dividends (assuming they were reinvested) and the benefit of any discounted capital raising or spin-off. So for companies that pay a generous dividend, the TSR is often a lot higher than the share price return. In the case of Prestige Estates Projects, it has a TSR of 771% for the last 5 years. That exceeds its share price return that we previously mentioned. This is largely a result of its dividend payments!
A Different Perspective
While the broader market gained around 6.7% in the last year, Prestige Estates Projects shareholders lost 8.1% (even including dividends). However, keep in mind that even the best stocks will sometimes underperform the market over a twelve month period. On the bright side, long term shareholders have made money, with a gain of 54% per year over half a decade. If the fundamental data continues to indicate long term sustainable growth, the current sell-off could be an opportunity worth considering. While it is well worth considering the different impacts that market conditions can have on the share price, there are other factors that are even more important.
