Some Investors May Be Worried About Shemaroo Entertainment's (NSE:SHEMAROO) Returns On Capital
If you're looking for a multi-bagger, there's a few things to keep an eye out for. Firstly, we'd want to identify a growing return on capital employed (ROCE) and then alongside that, an ever-increasing base of capital employed. If you see this, it typically means it's a company with a great business model and plenty of profitable reinvestment opportunities. In light of that, when we looked at Shemaroo Entertainment (NSE:SHEMAROO) and its ROCE trend, we weren't exactly thrilled.
Understanding Return On Capital Employed (ROCE)
If you haven't worked with ROCE before, it measures the 'return' (pre-tax profit) a company generates from capital employed in its business. The formula for this calculation on Shemaroo Entertainment is:
Return on Capital Employed = Earnings Before Interest and Tax (EBIT) ÷ (Total Assets - Current Liabilities)
0.069 = ₹417m ÷ (₹10b - ₹4.3b) (Based on the trailing twelve months to June 2023).
Therefore, Shemaroo Entertainment has an ROCE of 6.9%. In absolute terms, that's a low return but it's around the Entertainment industry average of 6.3%.

What Does the ROCE Trend For Shemaroo Entertainment Tell Us?
On the surface, the trend of ROCE at Shemaroo Entertainment doesn't inspire confidence. To be more specific, ROCE has fallen from 29% over the last five years. However, given capital employed and revenue have both increased it appears that the business is currently pursuing growth, at the consequence of short term returns. And if the increased capital generates additional returns, the business, and thus shareholders, will benefit in the long run.
On a separate but related note, it's important to know that Shemaroo Entertainment has a current liabilities to total assets ratio of 42%, which we'd consider pretty high. This can bring about some risks because the company is basically operating with a rather large reliance on its suppliers or other sorts of short-term creditors. While it's not necessarily a bad thing, it can be beneficial if this ratio is lower.
In Conclusion...
Even though returns on capital have fallen in the short term, we find it promising that revenue and capital employed have both increased for Shemaroo Entertainment. Despite these promising trends, the stock has collapsed 72% over the last five years, so there could be other factors hurting the company's prospects. Therefore, we'd suggest researching the stock further to uncover more about the business.
