Market Might Still Lack Some Conviction On Tirupati Forge Limited (NSE:TIRUPATIFL) Even After 26% Share Price Boost

Despite an already strong run, Tirupati Forge Limited (NSE:TIRUPATIFL) shares have been powering on, with a gain of 26% in the last thirty days. Unfortunately, the gains of the last month did little to right the losses of the last year with the stock still down 33% over that time.

In spite of the firm bounce in price, given about half the companies in India have price-to-earnings ratios (or "P/E's") above 30x, you may still consider Tirupati Forge as an attractive investment with its 25.3x P/E ratio. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.

For instance, Tirupati Forge's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

How Is Tirupati Forge's Growth Trending?

The only time you'd be truly comfortable seeing a P/E as low as Tirupati Forge's is when the company's growth is on track to lag the market.

Taking a look back first, the company's earnings per share growth last year wasn't something to get excited about as it posted a disappointing decline of 50%. Still, the latest three year period has seen an excellent 2,900% overall rise in EPS, in spite of its unsatisfying short-term performance. Although it's been a bumpy ride, it's still fair to say the earnings growth recently has been more than adequate for the company.

Weighing that recent medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 26% shows it's noticeably more attractive on an annualised basis.

With this information, we find it odd that Tirupati Forge is trading at a P/E lower than the market. It looks like most investors are not convinced the company can maintain its recent growth rates.

The Final Word

Tirupati Forge's stock might have been given a solid boost, but its P/E certainly hasn't reached any great heights. While the price-to-earnings ratio shouldn't be the defining factor in whether you buy a stock or not, it's quite a capable barometer of earnings expectations.

Our examination of Tirupati Forge revealed its three-year earnings trends aren't contributing to its P/E anywhere near as much as we would have predicted, given they look better than current market expectations. There could be some major unobserved threats to earnings preventing the P/E ratio from matching this positive performance. At least price risks look to be very low if recent medium-term earnings trends continue, but investors seem to think future earnings could see a lot of volatility.

Having said that, be aware Tirupati Forge is showing 3 warning signs in our investment analysis, and 1 of those is potentially serious.
