What Tata Chemicals Limited's (NSE:TATACHEM) P/S Is Not Telling You
There wouldn't be many who think Tata Chemicals Limited's (NSE:TATACHEM) price-to-sales (or "P/S") ratio of 1.7x is worth a mention when the median P/S for the Chemicals industry in India is very similar. Although, it's not wise to simply ignore the P/S without explanation as investors may be disregarding a distinct opportunity or a costly mistake.

What Does Tata Chemicals' Recent Performance Look Like?
Tata Chemicals has been struggling lately as its revenue has declined faster than most other companies. It might be that many expect the dismal revenue performance to revert back to industry averages soon, which has kept the P/S from falling. You'd much rather the company improve its revenue if you still believe in the business. Or at the very least, you'd be hoping it doesn't keep underperforming if your plan is to pick up some stock while it's not in favour.

Tata Chemicals' P/S ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver moderate growth, and importantly, perform in line with the industry.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 8.1% decrease to the company's top line. Even so, admirably revenue has lifted 51% in aggregate from three years ago, notwithstanding the last 12 months. So we can start by confirming that the company has generally done a very good job of growing revenue over that time, even though it had some hiccups along the way.
Shifting to the future, estimates from the eight analysts covering the company suggest revenue should grow by 4.1% per annum over the next three years. Meanwhile, the rest of the industry is forecast to expand by 13% per year, which is noticeably more attractive.
With this information, we find it interesting that Tata Chemicals is trading at a fairly similar P/S compared to the industry. It seems most investors are ignoring the fairly limited growth expectations and are willing to pay up for exposure to the stock. These shareholders may be setting themselves up for future disappointment if the P/S falls to levels more in line with the growth outlook.
The Final Word
Typically, we'd caution against reading too much into price-to-sales ratios when settling on investment decisions, though it can reveal plenty about what other market participants think about the company.
Given that Tata Chemicals' revenue growth projections are relatively subdued in comparison to the wider industry, it comes as a surprise to see it trading at its current P/S ratio. At present, we aren't confident in the P/S as the predicted future revenues aren't likely to support a more positive sentiment for long. This places shareholders' investments at risk and potential investors in danger of paying an unnecessary premium.
