Cosmo First Limited (NSE:COSMOFIRST) Held Back By Insufficient Growth Even After Shares Climb 35%
Cosmo First Limited (NSE:COSMOFIRST) shareholders have had their patience rewarded with a 35% share price jump in the last month. Looking back a bit further, it's encouraging to see the stock is up 68% in the last year.
Although its price has surged higher, Cosmo First's price-to-earnings (or "P/E") ratio of 25.6x might still make it look like a buy right now compared to the market in India, where around half of the companies have P/E ratios above 34x and even P/E's above 64x are quite common. Although, it's not wise to just take the P/E at face value as there may be an explanation why it's limited.
For instance, Cosmo First's receding earnings in recent times would have to be some food for thought. It might be that many expect the disappointing earnings performance to continue or accelerate, which has repressed the P/E. If you like the company, you'd be hoping this isn't the case so that you could potentially pick up some stock while it's out of favour.

Cosmo First's P/E ratio would be typical for a company that's only expected to deliver limited growth, and importantly, perform worse than the market.
Retrospectively, the last year delivered a frustrating 6.9% decrease to the company's bottom line. As a result, earnings from three years ago have also fallen 67% overall. So unfortunately, we have to acknowledge that the company has not done a great job of growing earnings over that time.
Weighing that medium-term earnings trajectory against the broader market's one-year forecast for expansion of 26% shows it's an unpleasant look.
In light of this, it's understandable that Cosmo First's P/E would sit below the majority of other companies. Nonetheless, there's no guarantee the P/E has reached a floor yet with earnings going in reverse. There's potential for the P/E to fall to even lower levels if the company doesn't improve its profitability.
The Key Takeaway
Despite Cosmo First's shares building up a head of steam, its P/E still lags most other companies. Generally, our preference is to limit the use of the price-to-earnings ratio to establishing what the market thinks about the overall health of a company.
We've established that Cosmo First maintains its low P/E on the weakness of its sliding earnings over the medium-term, as expected. At this stage investors feel the potential for an improvement in earnings isn't great enough to justify a higher P/E ratio. Unless the recent medium-term conditions improve, they will continue to form a barrier for the share price around these levels.
